Why leveling your dishwasher matters
A dishwasher must sit perfectly level to work correctly. If it tilts forward, backward, or sideways, you may notice:
Water pooling inside after a cycle
Door not closing properly
Loud vibration or rattling
Poor washing performance
Small leaks under the unit
The good news is that leveling a dishwasher is usually quick and requires only basic tools.
Tools you will need
Spirit level (bubble level)
Adjustable wrench or pliers
Screwdriver
Flashlight (optional but helpful)
Step 1. Turn off power and water
Safety comes first.
Switch off the dishwasher at the power outlet or breaker
Shut off the water supply valve under the sink
This prevents accidental shocks or leaks while you work.
Step 2. Pull the dishwasher slightly forward
Remove the lower front kick plate if attached
Carefully slide the dishwasher out a few inches
Do NOT pull too far or strain the hoses
You only need enough space to access the adjustable legs.
Step 3. Locate the adjustable leveling legs
Most dishwashers have:
Two adjustable legs in front
One or two rear leveling screws or legs
These can be turned to raise or lower each corner.
Step 4. Check the level (front-to-back and side-to-side)
Place the spirit level on the bottom rack or door edge
Check left-to-right level
Check front-to-back level
The bubble should sit exactly in the center.
Step 5. Adjust the legs slowly
Turn the legs:
Clockwise → lowers the dishwasher
Counter-clockwise → raises it
Adjust one side at a time.
✔ Make small turns
✔ Recheck with the level after each adjustment
Do not rush this step. Precision matters.
Step 6. Push the dishwasher back and test
Once level:
Carefully slide it back into position
Restore water and power
Run a short rinse cycle
Check for:
Smooth operation
No rocking
No leaks
Proper draining
If everything looks good, reinstall the kick plate.
Extra tips from technicians
Slight backward tilt (very tiny) helps draining
Never force the legs — they can strip
If the floor is uneven, use appliance shims
Always tighten mounting brackets after leveling
When leveling alone won’t fix the problem
Call a technician if:
Dishwasher still leaks
Cabinet opening is warped
Floor underneath is soft or damaged
Legs are broken or rusted
Final thoughts
Leveling a dishwasher is one of the easiest maintenance tasks that can prevent major future repairs. With just a level tool and a few minutes of adjustment, you can stop noise, improve cleaning, and extend your appliance’s lifespan.
